The old village is located on top of one of the hills towered by the Dosso del Cerreto in Valgrigna and has kept the pristine medieval urban planning of its historic centre (a few towers) almost intact. Here, visit the church of Santa Maria Annunziata, once known as Santa Maria degli Orti, dating back to the 1400‘s, featuring a remarkable belfry with mullioned windows of two lights and a pointed arch portal surmounted by a central gothic style rose window on the façade. Wholly frescoed by Giovanni Pietro da Cemmo and Paolo da Caylina the Young, the church also houses, among others, some works by Romanino (1539-40). Medieval towers Avanzini, Morandini and Rizzieri were built as a defence to the most powerful and richest families in the village and probably date back to 1400. The Palazzo Francesconi Rabajoli in Via San Benedetto features frescoes by Fiamminghino, while the Palazzo Simonini-Fe’ d’Ostiani, presently a nursery school, features a remarkably frescoed hall on the second floor.
