The Parco nazionale delle Incisioni Rupestri (Rock Carvings National Park) is located in Capo di Ponte and was funded in 1955 by the Soprintendenza Archeologica della Lombardia (Lombardy Archaeological Superintendence). It is one of the oldest archaeological parks in Europe. It comprises 104 carved rocks dating back to the iron Age (VIII-I centuries b.C.) and attributed to the Cammuni civilization. Source: http://www.rupestre.net/alps/valca_naquane_visita.html. The Valle Camonica rock carvings are the widest collection of rupestrian art in Europe. About 350,000 graphical works (petroglyphs) have been discovered so far, but every year new discoveries help increase their number. They are an extraordinary evidence of the Camuni civilization which inhabited this area in the Neolithic age, from the Roman Age till the Middle Ages. In 1979 they were the first Italian site to be made UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE.
