North of Ostiglia you can visit the Santuario della Madonna della Comuna (XIVth Century) “touched up” by Giulio Romano in 1533 with its Neo-gothic belfry, the “Paludi di Ostiglia” (Ostiglia Bogs) Natural Reserve rich with water, wildlife and vegetation and Isola Boschina on the Po river, you can reach on foot (when the water is low) the or by boat. the church was built to celebrate the Virgin’s apparition and was enlarged in the next century. in 1533 the chapel was touched up by Giulio Romano who gave it its present features. The sanctuary gathered new strength when the Franciscan Friars came to live in the nearby friary in 1993. On their commission new restoration and refurbishing works have been carried out to make the church more appealing and accessible for visitors.
