Together with adjoining San Giovanni Baptistry, San Vincenzo Basilica is one of the most remarkable high medieval buildings in Lombardy. built on the Galliano Hill the basilica was for a few centuries the Parish of Cantù. We know it was consecrated in 1007 and that it was influential Ariberto da Intimiano, later Archbishop of Milan, who had its walls renovated and frescoed. due to its strategical position, Galliano Hill was inhabited since the Pre-roman Age by Gallic-celtic populations and some gravestones dedicated to the Matrons dating back to the Celtic age are a clue that confirm the peculiar religious disposition of this place. The frescoes inside the Basilica are considered the largest and most important cycle of wall-paintings from the Ottonian Age in northern Italy. They were painted by an anonymous master who was charged with the decoration of the church by Ariberto and masterly mixed the eastern culture from Byzantium and the western later old style.
