Rodengo Saiano Olivetan Abbey is undoubtedly one of the most majestic and richest religious complexes of Northern Italy. Founded by the Cluniac monks before 1050, it was erected at a fundamental Roman crossroads on the road to the town and to Rome where pilgrims could stop in their pious journey. In 1446 the primeval abbey was given to the Benedictine monks of the Olivetan Order from Monte Oliveto Maggiore near Siena with the aim of strengthening the faith across the area and achieving a better control over the territory and the population. The monks immediately started to build the two cloisters, enlarge the church and meanwhile accomplished the reclamation of the nearby land, which belonged to abbey estate, and subsequently also started fruitful farming activities in efficient farm, some of which are still existing and offer a remarkable historic as well as artistic testimony.
