Villa Greppi is an example of the numerous remarkable seasonal residences commissioned between the XVIIth and XIXth centuries by the Brianza landed nobility. Located in Monticello, near the hamlet of Casate Vecchio, it towers the place and is perfectly integrated with the rustic houses around the villa itself , its park and the bordering farmland. The history of the building is rather bitty, a pristine hamlet was recorded in the Catasto Teresiano (Teresian Building Record), in 1811 it was purchased by the Greppi family, refurbished and turned into the present holiday and entertainment mansion. Further later refurbishments were carried out along the centuries until the early XXth century. The villa features a classical U shaped plan, with an underground and a ground floor whose rooms, exception made for the chapel, were originally meant to be service areas. The first floor was the entertainment area of the house, with luxurious, finely decorated and furnished halls and the family library with its archive. The family quarters and guest-rooms were located on the second floor. The park is also worth a mention as it features a typical Italian style garden and an English landscape garden with lovely examples of plant architecture, topiary and extraordinary solitary specimens. The whole complex was donated to the Vatican by the last descendant of the Greppis.
